The Department of Regional and International Political Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Baghdad held a panel discussion entitled “Russia’s position on the Syrian crisis” presented by researcher M.M. Sarah Abdul Kazem Jawad, in the presence of the head of the department, Dr. Mufid Kased Al-Zaidi and members of the Center.
The episode reviewed the causes of the Syrian crisis that has erupted since 2011, while discussing the Russian role in supporting the Syrian government. The research dealt with Russian support, which included armament, the establishment of military bases in Tartus and Hmeimim, and the use of veto power in the UN Security Council to prevent the imposition of economic sanctions on Syria.
The seminar also discussed the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the continuity of Russian support for Syria, and pointed to the possibility of a decline in this support due to the transformation of the war into a conflict of attrition, which may lead to the weakening of the Syrian army and its withdrawal from large areas, leading to the possibility of the fall of the Syrian regime.
