The Crisis Studies Department at the Center hosted a workshop titled ” The Phenomenon of Irregular Migration: Its Causes and Consequences – Libya as a Case Study” presented by Pro. Dr. Mona Hussein Obaid

The workshop examined the major risks associated with irregular migration for countries of origin, transit, and countries of destination. It emphasized the impact on population pressure, economic and social crises, and the severe dangers migrants face, including violence and death.

Dr. Obaid highlighted that Libya is among the most affected countries, experiencing a significant surge in irregular migration flows—particularly after transitioning from a nation reliant on foreign aid to a key oil producer and exporter. This shift has made Libya a primary country of destination for migrants.

She further explained that a combination of internal and external factors, along with economic growth and the expansion of the oil sector, has intensified this phenomenon in Libya.

This workshop is part of a series of academic activities organized by the Center to analyze global issues and assess their impact on regional security and stability.
