The book “The Afghan Experience”, authored by Dr. Nadia Fadhel Abbas, a researcher and academic affiliated with our center has been published by Al Arabi Publishing and Distribution House in Cairo. The volume explores the political and security transformations that Afghanistan has undergone from the Soviet invasion in 1979 to the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
The book presents a comprehensive analysis of the successive stages of conflict that have marked the country’s contemporary history—beginning with international interventions and the rivalry among global powers, through the rise of jihadist movements and Al-Qaeda, and culminating in the establishment of the Islamic Emirate of the Taliban in 1996, followed by the U.S. intervention in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
It further examines the agreement signed between the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump and the Taliban movement in February 2020, the ensuing swift withdrawal of U.S. forces from Kabul, and the subsequent political and security repercussions within Afghanistan and across its regional sphere.
The book constitutes a significant academic contribution that traces four decades of Afghanistan’s political upheavals, offering a nuanced analytical perspective on the intricate interconnection between domestic dynamics and international power politics.
