The Department of Crisis Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Baghdad held a specialized workshop entitled Israeli Motives behind the Approval of the Law on the Execution of Palestinian Prisoners, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Badriya Salih Abdullah, in the presence of a distinguished group of academics and specialized researchers.

The workshop aimed to analyze the legal and political dimensions of the decision approved by the Israeli Knesset in conjunction with Land Day commemorations on March 30, 2026, and to examine the implications of this legislation for the state of human rights and international humanitarian law in the occupied territories.

The workshop included a detailed presentation addressing several key issues, including tracing the stages of the law’s approval process, which followed a prolonged legislative path beginning in March 2023 and culminating in its final ratification by a parliamentary majority, driven by far-right forces within the Israeli government. It further explained how Article (301/A) of the Israeli Penal Code was amended to facilitate the issuance of death sentences without requiring unanimous judicial consent.

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the necessity of action by international and human rights institutions to confront this legislative escalation, which consolidates the authority of the occupation and contravenes international conventions. It also stressed the importance of academically documenting these legal violations and clarifying their broader implications to global public opinion.
