Under the auspices and direction of Prof. Dr. Saad Obaid Alwan, the Center’s Director, the Public Policy Department held its quarterly symposium, “The Role of Public Policy in Protecting Iraq from Extremism and Terrorism,” at the Urban and Regional Planning Center for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad.
The symposium drew a select group of professors and researchers working in the field. Asst. Prof. Dr. Riyadh Abd Ibrahim chaired the session, with Asst. Lecturer Raad Khudair Saleebi serving as rapporteur. Participants examined the current state of public policy on countering extremism and terrorism, as well as the challenges to security and political stability in Iraq. Several key papers from security and academic institutions were presented, addressing ideological and digital extremism and the role of artificial intelligence, universities, and civil society in supporting national security.
The symposium’s recommendations included putting the national public policy strategy into effect, expanding the role of universities in raising public awareness, countering digital extremism, using artificial intelligence technologies, removing barriers to implementation, and improving performance.
The symposium concluded with participants affirming that Iraq’s political and security stability depends closely on the ability of state institutions to develop sound, integrated public policies that protect society and preserve social peace. Certificates of appreciation were then presented to the professors and researchers who contributed papers, and to the members of the committees that prepared and organized the symposium, in recognition of their efforts and scholarly contributions.
