The Department of Public Policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Role of Iraqi Universities in Combating Drugs”.
The workshop, which was presented by researchers Dr. Muhannad Abdul Wahab, Eng. Noman Abdul Karim Noah, included a discussion of the role of universities in combating the scourge of drugs, which is killing Iraqi youth.
The researchers focused on the drug problem, which is a serious social, health and economic issue facing many countries, including Iraq, where drugs involve the use of chemicals that affect the function of the central nervous system, causing changes in mood, behavior and awareness.
In addition, these substances can include natural drugs (such as hashish) and processed drugs (such as morphine, heroin and cocaine).
The researchers also discussed in their paper that drug abuse leads to addiction, which poses a major challenge to public health and leads to serious mental and physical health problems, as drug use causes the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis due to needle exchange.
