As part of Iraqi Anti-Drug Week, the Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Baghdad held a workshop titled “Mechanisms for Combating the Drug Scourge at the National Level” on November 19, 2025.
The workshop was led by Assistant Lecturer Dr. Ali Abdul- Mutalib Sadiq, who examined Iraq’s counter-narcotics efforts from both legal and social perspectives.
From a legal standpoint, he emphasized the central role of the legislative authority in building a strong regulatory foundation, noting that Law No. 50 of 2017 on Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances remains a key pillar of this framework.
On the social side, he discussed national strategies for prevention, including early intervention, encouraging individuals to seek help, and reinforcing family and community support networks. He also highlighted the important roles played by religious institutions, media outlets, and civil society organizations in advancing national efforts to limit the spread of drugs.
